Leer en español: Política de privacidad

In short

  • When you scan a stone, the photo goes to our server and to Anthropic’s AI only to identify it. We don’t store the photo.
  • We keep the result together with a fingerprint of the image (a code that can’t be turned back into the photo), so the same photo gets the same answer without a new scan.
  • A random install ID (and, with Mohs Pro, your subscription’s ID) counts your daily scans. Your IP address is used for a daily limit against abuse. These counters are deleted automatically within 3 days.
  • Your collection and the places you found your stones stay on your iPhone.
  • No account, no ads, no tracking, no analytics SDKs. We never sell your data.

Who We Are

Mohs – Rock Identifier (“Mohs” or “the App”) is developed by Natalia Ortiz, an independent developer based in Spain (“we”, “us”), who is responsible for the data described here. This policy explains what happens to your information when you use the App.

Identifying a Stone

When you take or choose a photo to identify, the App shrinks it to about 800 pixels and sends it without its location or other photo metadata to our identification service, which runs on Cloudflare (our hosting provider). Our service passes the photo to Anthropic’s AI model, which returns the likely species. If you answer the home tests (for example, whether the stone scratches glass), those answers are sent the same way.

  • We don’t store your photo. It is used for that request and discarded.
  • Anthropic processes the photo as our service provider under its commercial terms: it does not use it to train its models, and keeps it only for a limited time under its data retention policy, for safety and abuse monitoring. See anthropic.com/legal/privacy.
  • We keep the result (the candidate species and their confidence) together with a SHA-256 fingerprint of the image and of your test answers, so the same photo gets the same answer again without costing a scan. The fingerprint cannot be turned back into the photo and is not linked to you.
  • Don’t photograph people or anything private: the App is meant for stones.

Counting Scans and Preventing Abuse

Identifications cost us money, so the number per day is limited (3 a day for free, up to 40 with Mohs Pro). To count them:

  • The App creates a random install ID on your iPhone. It identifies the installation, not you, and is not linked to your name, Apple ID or advertising identifier.
  • With Mohs Pro, the App sends the App Store’s signed record of your subscription so our server can check it with Apple’s signature. We use its original transaction ID to count your scans; we don’t receive your name, Apple ID or payment details.
  • Your device’s IP address is used for a coarse daily limit per network, so the free scans can’t be multiplied by reinstalling.
  • We note which install ID scanned which image fingerprint, so that answering the home tests on it within the next hour is free.
  • App Attest. On devices that support it, your iPhone creates a key in its secure chip and Apple certifies that it belongs to the genuine Mohs app; the App then signs each scan request with it. We store that key’s identifier and public part to check the signatures, and count free scans against it too. It identifies the installation, not you, and cannot be used to track you. A key unused for 90 days is deleted.

These counters (install ID, subscription ID and IP address, with the date and number of scans) are deleted automatically within 3 days. Like any web service, Cloudflare may also keep short-lived technical logs of requests, including the IP address, for security and troubleshooting.

We use this data only to run the App and to limit abuse, on the basis of our legitimate interest in providing a service that costs us money per scan and of performing our contract with you when you subscribe.

Your Collection Stays on Your Device

The finds you save (photo, species, notes, and the location if you add one) are stored only in the App’s database on your iPhone. They are not sent to us or to any server, and the App does not sync them to iCloud. If you back up your whole iPhone, that backup may include them, under your backup settings.

  • Location. If a photo from your library already has its own location, the App reads it on your device to place the find on the map, without asking for permission. The App asks for location permission (“while using”) only when you tap to add your current location to a find. Locations are never sent to us.
  • Camera and photos. The App uses the camera and the photos you choose only to identify stones and to save them in your collection.

Because we never receive your collection, we can’t see, recover or restore it. If you delete the App, it is deleted.

Purchases (Mohs Pro)

Subscriptions are processed by Apple through the App Store. We never see your payment details. Apple provides us with sales reports that do not identify you.

Notifications

If you start the free trial and accept the reminder, the App schedules a local notification on your iPhone two days before the trial ends. It is created by iOS on your device; no data is sent to us.

Information We Do Not Collect

  • No account details (Mohs has no sign-in)
  • No name, email, contacts or microphone
  • No advertising identifier; we do not track you across apps or websites
  • No third-party analytics, advertising or tracking SDKs

Crash Reports

If you have chosen in iOS Settings to share analytics with app developers, Apple may send us anonymous crash reports and usage statistics. You can turn this off in iOS Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements.

Where Data Is Processed

Cloudflare and Anthropic may process data in the United States and other countries. When data leaves the European Economic Area, it is protected by the safeguards those providers offer, such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.

Your Rights

Under the GDPR and similar laws you have the rights of access, correction, deletion, objection, restriction and portability. Because we don’t know who you are, and the counters are deleted within 3 days, we usually can’t link any data to you; if you write to us, we will help as far as we can. You can reset your install ID only by erasing your iPhone. In Spain you can also complain to the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos (aepd.es); in Mexico, to the competent data protection authority.

Children

Mohs is suitable for all ages and collects no information that identifies anyone. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to This Policy

If the App changes how it handles data, we will update this policy before the change and show the new date at the top.

  • No guardamos tu foto.

Contar escaneos y evitar abusos
